About Hydropower in Nepal
Nepal has an estimated 83,000 MW of economically viable hydropower potential, of which only a small fraction has been developed so far. The steep terrain, snow fed rivers, and high annual rainfall make the country ideal for hydropower generation. Most projects are run of river type, located on major rivers such as the Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, and their tributaries. Large projects like the 900 MW Upper Karnali and 1200 MW Budhi Gandaki are in various stages of development, while plants like the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi are already in operation. Hydropower is the backbone of Nepal’s energy sector and a key driver of the national economy.
